I have recently seen some
articles about whether AI can create art. It is one of those dumb ideas that is easy clickbait. The art created often tries to
imitate figurative renaissance style painting, and it looks dumb. Computers are not artists yet!
The more interesting topic is how
many coders are now making motion art, and beautiful art, with just code.
I am not a coder. But as a curator for gifs for Cross
Connect I am always on the lookout for great gif artists and over and over
again I find really interesting work being done by coders, with code. Often without any art background or
training they simply have a desire to create something beautiful that moves,
and their paintbrush is code, as opposed to standard animation tools like After
Effects or Cinema 4D, let alone actual paintbrushes.
Of course the work is for the most part abstract. For a time I had harbored this idea that it was a trend that would run its course: After all how many times will a spinning torus or vortex interest you?
But
the opposite seems to be true. The
variation and excellence in this genre seems to be increasing in richness as artists learn from each other and develop new techniques. Some of the most startling and innovative motion imagery I have seen in the last year comes from this area,
Here are a few examples of the
surprising variety that is out there. Note how different not only in the imagery but the overall feeling each of these examples give you.
